The Heart of Our Community: Why Seniors Still Matter More Than Ever

Happy Saturday afternoon, everyone! Seniors: today I’d like to talk about something a little different. I’d like to talk about YOU. Not your age. Not your health. But your importance to this community.

When people hear “Chamber of Commerce,” they usually think of business owners sitting around talking about money. Sometimes they picture ribbon cuttings. Sometimes they think we’re just there to welcome new businesses.

Yes, we do those things. But that’s really only part of what we do. Our job is to help create a community where people want to live, work, raise families, retire, and visit. That means supporting local businesses, encouraging new opportunities, promoting tourism, helping nonprofits, and strengthening the entire community. And here’s something many people don’t realize…

None of that happens without you!

Whether you’re retired or still working, you are one of the most important parts of our local economy. Many of you remember businesses that no longer exist. You remember dirt roads. You remember when people knew every shop owner by name. You remember buying groceries where someone knew your family before you walked in.

Some of you helped build businesses that your children or grandchildren still run today. Some of you taught in our schools. Farmed. Ranched. Worked construction. Owned stores. Worked for the city or worked for the county. Many of you served in churches. Volunteered. Raised families.

Everything we enjoy today rests on foundations that your generation helped build. That deserves recognition!

Today people sometimes think economic development only means attracting big business, investors who believe in our region, or seeking grant after grant after grant. But economic development often looks a lot smaller....

• It looks like someone buying a cup of coffee downtown.

• Buying a birthday gift from a local shop.

• Eating lunch at a family-owned restaurant.

• Hiring a local plumber.

• Buying handmade crafts from a local maker.

Every dollar that stays in town helps another family!

At the Chamber we’re working hard to give our local businesses more opportunities to succeed:

🧶 We’re creating the Maker’s Mercantile so local artisans have a place to sell their work.

📺 We’re building our Digital Network to help businesses advertise affordably.

🤝 We host networking events.

🎊 We promote community events.

🤗 We welcome visitors.

Because when businesses succeed: THE COMMUNITY SUCCEEDS 🏆

But I’d also like to challenge all of you: Don’t underestimate your influence! You have something businesses cannot buy...

• Experience.

• Wisdom.

• Relationships.

• Reputation.

When YOU recommend a business...people listen.

When you tell your grandchildren about a local restaurant…they’ll probably go there.

When you attend a community event…other people notice.

When you volunteer…you inspire others.

Seniors, YOU are still shaping this community every single day!

One of my favorite things about living here is that St. Johns still feels like a place where people know each other. If someone’s sick, people bring food. If a business opens, people show up. If there’s a fundraiser, people pitch in. Those kinds of communities don’t happen by accident. They’re built by generations of people who care. Just like you.

Retirement doesn’t mean your contribution is finished. In many ways, it's merely changed. Now you have the opportunity to mentor, encourage, volunteer, shop locally, support young entrepreneurs, share stories, preserve history, teach traditions, and help make sure this remains the kind of town your grandchildren will want to come home to.

Communities don’t become strong and successful through buildings. They become strong because of people. We value everything you’ve done and everything you’re still doing. You will never be obsolete or of little use to our community.

YOU are the keepers of our stories and the advisors of our future and for that we say...THANK YOU!
